The life of an Overland Park resident is busy, often requiring a quick pivot from a polished professional setting to a relaxed weekend activity—sometimes without time to completely restyle your hair!
The secret to a successful hair transition is mastering the quick updo: elegant styles that take five minutes or less and work best on second or third-day hair.
At OP Hair Salon, located at 11790 W 135th St, Overland Park, KS 66221, our stylists specialize in low-effort, high-impact solutions. We are sharing three of our favorite, fast updos that will keep you looking chic from the boardroom to the backyard barbecue, with just a few pins and a touch of product.
🛠️ Your Updo Essentials
Before you start, grab these must-have items:
- Dry Shampoo: Essential for absorbing oils and adding grip/texture.
- Clear Elastics: For securing ponytails invisibly.
- Bobby Pins: Match your hair color and have both open-ended and closed-ended pins ready.
- Finishing Spray: A flexible hold hairspray for lasting power.
1. The Effortless Twisted Low Bun (For the Boardroom)
This style is polished, professional, and looks much more complicated than it actually is. It works perfectly on straight or wavy hair.
The How-To:
- Prep: Spray dry shampoo or a texture spray throughout the hair, focusing on the roots for lift.
- Part & Gather: Create a deep side part. Gather all your hair at the nape of your neck into a loose, low ponytail. Do not secure it yet.
- The Twist: Twist the entire length of the ponytail tightly until it coils against your head.
- Pin: Wrap the coiled twist around itself to form a compact bun. Secure the bun by inserting bobby pins horizontally around the edges, making sure to anchor the pins into the base of the ponytail.
- Finish: Gently pull a few pieces out around the face and use a flexible hold spray to tame any flyaways.
- Stylist Tip: For a softer look, leave out two small sections in front of the ears and twist them back, pinning them over the bun.
2. The Textured Half-Up Flip (For Casual Fridays)
A perfect style for showing off your length while keeping hair out of your face. This works beautifully if you have long layers or a Butterfly Cut.
The How-To:
- Prep: Use a volumizing spray at the root of your crown.
- Section: Take the top half of your hair—everything from the top of your ears up—and gather it as if making a half-up ponytail.
- The Flip: Secure the ponytail with a clear elastic. Create a small hole (or “pocket”) just above the elastic. Flip the ponytail up and under through the pocket.
- Tighten: Gently pull on the ends of the ponytail to tighten the twist, creating a chic, knotted effect at the back of your head.
- Finish: Add a decorative clip or bow over the secured twist for a weekend-ready flair. Tease the hair at the crown slightly for volume.
3. The Chic Modern Claw Clip Updo (For Weekend Errands)
The 90s classic is back and it’s the fastest, chicest way to get hair off your neck—perfect for running errands or hitting the Overland Park farmers market.
The How-To:
- Prep: If your hair is too slick, rub a little texture cream between your palms and run it through your mid-lengths for grip.
- The Coil: Gather all your hair as if making a high ponytail at the back of your crown. Twist the ponytail into a tight, upward coil against the back of your head.
- The Fold: Fold the coiled hair back down on itself, resting the fold just against your head.
- Secure: Open a large, sturdy claw clip and secure the folded hair vertically, catching the base of the coil in the clip for maximum hold.
- Finish: Gently loosen the hair at the crown and along the sides of your head using the tip of a comb or your fingers to soften the look and prevent it from looking too tight.
Don’t let a lack of time dictate your style. With these quick-fix tutorials and a little practice, you can keep that polished, salon-fresh feeling all week long.
